Get Winter-Ready Men’s Waterproof Jackets and Rain Coats for 2025

It might sound obvious, but in the UK, rain or snow shows up a lot. Across the country, there are roughly 150 to 160 days each year with measurable rainfall or snow — almost half the year spent dealing with wet weather.
At RD1 Clothing, our men’s waterproof coats and rain coats range from around £55 to £485, covering everything from lightweight packable waterproofs to insulated anoraks and water-resistant parkas. Whether you’re walking the dog, waiting for a train or heading home after a match, a decent rain coat makes life that bit easier.
Believe it or not, even working in a clothes shop, I spend at least an hour a day outdoors with my dog. You soon learn which coats keep you dry — and which ones just look the part.
What Makes a Good Waterproof Coat For Men
Not all men’s waterproof coats are built the same. The main thing to understand is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant.
Water-Resistant Jackets
A water-resistant jacket is designed for light rain. They usually use a DWR coating — which stands for Durable Water Repellent — applied to the outer fabric. This makes water bead up and roll off instead of soaking in. Others use fabrics like man-made polyamide, which can be recycled.
It’s a good option for everyday wear because it’s lightweight, breathable and comfortable. Over time, you may need to reproof it occasionally with a specialist spray or wash-in treatment.
You’ll find water-resistant jackets like the Napapijri Rainforest Anorak or Gabicci water-resistant macs — spot on for drizzle and changeable days, but not for long, heavy rain.
Waterproof Jackets
A proper waterproof jacket is built for real wet weather — the kind that soaks through lighter layers. Unlike water-resistant styles, these use a membrane inside the fabric that blocks rain and, in some cases, lets heat and moisture escape, so you stay dry without feeling clammy.
Take the Henri-Lloyd Viking Smock, for example. It’s made with a hydrophilic PU (polyurethane) membrane, designed to balance waterproofing and breathability. It stops water getting in but still lets body heat escape. Its three-layer construction is fully seam-taped, with YKK® AquaGuard® zips and an adjustable hood for proper foul-weather protection. It’s also PFC-free, using an eco-friendly C0 DWR coating.

Some waterproof jackets, like those from Aquascutum, use specialist fabrics such as Hydro Fabric, YKK® zips and PrimaLoft® padding — refined over decades to keep you warm and dry without bulk. Together they form a watertight seal while staying light and breathable. Ideal for smart waterproof coats — the kind you can wear to work without feeling like you’re dressed for a hike.

The Bottom Line
Water-resistant = Ideal for light rain, travel, and everyday wear.
Waterproof = Built for proper downpours and long wet days.
Lightweight and Packable Men’s Rain Coats
Not every rainy day calls for a heavy coat. Our lightweight and packable men’s rain coats are made for everyday use and warmer seasons — great for commuting, travel or keeping handy when the weather turns.
These men’s waterproof jackets weigh very little and still keep you dry in light rain. They’re water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, which makes them more breathable and comfortable for daily wear.

How to Care for Your Waterproof or Rain Coat
A decent men’s waterproof coat should last years if you treat it properly. There’s no one-size-fits-all care guide — every jacket’s built differently — but a bit of care and common sense goes a long way.
First rule: always read the care label. The manufacturer and brand knows what’s best for the fabric and finish. If it says you can wash it yourself, don’t just throw it in with the household load at 40 or 60 degrees. You don’t want to ruin the jacket or strip off the waterproof coatings.
For smart macs and tailored waterproofs, an occasional dry clean (if advised on the care label) helps them keep their shape and protection. These coats are an investment — look after them, and they’ll keep you dry for years.
Final Thoughts on Rain Coats
With roughly half the year bringing rain, a reliable men’s waterproof coat or rain coat isn’t just handy — it’s essential.
