The RD1 Autumn Edit: What to Wear This September
September is the awkward month. It is too warm for a coat at lunchtime and too cold for a tee by the time you leave the pub. The answer is not one big jacket. It is a handful of pieces that stack, so you can add a layer or lose one without the whole outfit falling apart.
This is our autumn edit for 2026: eight pieces from stock we hold right now, picked because they work together. There is a parka that turns into three jackets, a Weekend Offender overshirt that does the in-between days, a Gabicci knitted polo, a Napapijri quarter zip, black Lee jeans, a pair of Diadora Camaros and a MA.STRUM beanie for when the clocks go back. Below you will find why each one made the cut, honest sizing notes and three ways to put them together.
The Jacket: Napapijri Pilloz 3 in 1 Short Parka
If you buy one piece of outerwear this autumn, make it one that changes with the weather. The Napapijri Pilloz 3 in 1 Short Parka is a ripstop shell with a detachable insulated gilet zipped inside. Wear the shell alone in September, the gilet alone under a coat, or both together when it turns properly cold. That is three jackets for £310, which is how the price makes sense.
The shell is windproof and water-resistant with taped seams, so a wet walk to the ground is not a problem. The gilet uses Comfortemp insulation, which gives warmth without bulk. It is a short parka rather than a long one, so it sits at the hip and works with jeans without swamping you. At least 70% of it is recycled material, which is worth knowing even if it is not why you buy it.
We have it in black, with an olive version also in the range. Black is the safer buy if you already own a green jacket. Olive is the one to go for if your wardrobe is heavy on navy and black and needs something to break it up. Sizing is regular fit and we hold S to 3XL. Buy your usual size; the gilet is cut to fit inside the shell, so there is no need to go up.
The Lightweight Jacket: Lyle & Scott Contrast Zip Through Hooded Jacket
Not every day needs a parka. For the dry, breezy September days, the Lyle & Scott Contrast Zip Through Hooded Jacket in Khaki Ash and Jet Black is the one you grab on the way out. It is a full-zip hooded jacket in 100% polyester with contrast panelling, an adjustable hood and side zip pockets. The Golden Eagle sits on the chest and does the talking.
At £100 it is the sporty option in this edit, and it sits closer to the track top end of things than the parka does. That is the point. It goes over a tee or a polo, under nothing, and it packs down small enough to shove in a bag when the sun comes out at three o'clock. It is machine washable, which matters more than people admit for a jacket that will be worn most days.
The khaki and black combination is the autumn colourway, but it also comes in plain black if you want something that disappears under a coat later in the year. We hold S to 2XL and it fits true to size.
The Overshirt: Weekend Offender Pancho Jacket
The overshirt is the piece that does the most work in September and October. Too light to be a coat, too structured to be a shirt, and exactly right for the days when you are not sure. Stone is the clever colour here. It lifts black jeans and dark knitwear, and it sits under the black Pilloz without the two fighting. If you would rather keep the whole thing dark, the Pancho also comes in black. Either way it is £100 and we hold S to 3XL.
One honest note on fit. The Pancho comes up generous and we recommend going a size down from your usual. If you normally take a large and you want it fitted, take a medium. If you plan to wear a knit under it and want room, stick with your usual size. Give us a shout if you are not sure and we will measure one up for you.
The Knitted Polo: Gabicci Vintage Searle Stripe
We wrote about the knitted polo back in July and nothing has changed except the weather, which has moved in its favour. A knitted polo is warmer than a pique one, smarter than a sweatshirt and it layers under everything else in this edit. The Gabicci Vintage Searle Stripe Knitted Polo in Navy is the one we would put at the top of the pile.
Gabicci has been making this shape since the seventies and the Searle is a straight-down-the-line version of it. Horizontal stripes across a smooth knit, a proper button placket and short sleeves that sit neatly under a jacket. It is £75 and it reads as mod first, terrace second, which is exactly the crossover RD1 has always sat in.
Navy is the one that goes with everything. If you already have navy knitwear coming out of your ears, the same polo comes in charcoal, which is arguably the better shade under the stone Pancho. We hold M to 3XL. It is a regular fit and true to size; if you are between sizes, go up rather than down, as knitwear that pulls across the chest is never a good look. Machine washable, but check the label and go easy on the tumble dryer.
The Quarter Zip: Napapijri Box Logo
Every autumn wardrobe needs a mid layer that is not a hoodie. The Napapijri Box Logo Quarter Zip in Black Beauty is ours. High neckline, quarter zip, ribbed cuffs and hem, and the Napapijri box logo on the chest. It is the piece you wear over a tee on its own in September and under the Pilloz shell once November arrives.
The quarter zip is more useful than a crew neck because you can open it up when you get warm indoors and zip it to the chin when you are stood outside. It is regular fit and £85. Black keeps it simple; it works with the black Lee jeans below for a full dark look, or against stone and khaki if you want the jacket to do the colour.
We hold M to 3XL. Order your usual size. If you plan to wear it mostly over a shirt or knit, it has enough room without going up.
The Jeans: Lee MVP Slim Fit Black
The bottom half is easy. The Lee Jeans MVP Slim Fit in Black is the pair that works with every top in this edit. Slim through the leg without being tight, a cotton and elastane mix so there is stretch where you need it, and classic five-pocket styling. Black denim looks sharper than indigo under stone and khaki, and it hides a muddy touchline better.
Lee has been making jeans since 1889 and the MVP is one of its cleaner modern cuts. It is a slim fit, not a skinny one, so it sits properly over a trainer rather than stacking on top of it. At £65 it is the best-value piece here and probably the one you will wear the most.
We hold waist sizes 30 to 40 with 30, 32 and 34 leg lengths, so most of you are covered. They fit true to size with a bit of give from the stretch. If you prefer the same jean in a different fit or wash, the wider Lee range has other options.
The Trainers: Diadora Camaro Triple M2
We called the Camaro M2 the everyday workhorse of the Diadora range when we wrote about the Titan, and that is why it is here. The Diadora Camaro Triple M2 in Charcoal, Shitake and Carafe is the autumn colourway: grey suede and textile with earthy brown tones layered through it. It is the trainer you can wear in the rain without wincing.
The Camaro is a heritage running silhouette from the same 80s archive that gave us the Borg Elite and the Seb Coe. Layered suede and textile upper, contrast Diadora side branding, cushioned midsole and a rubber outsole that will take a season of pavements. At £80 it sits at the same price as the Titan and the Cross Rainy, and if you own neither, it is the sensible first pair.
Charcoal is the safest of the five colourways we carry and it goes with black jeans, stone, olive and navy without thinking about it. We hold UK 6 to 12 with half sizes at 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5. Like the rest of the Diadora range it fits true to size on a medium Italian last, so order your usual. Wipe clean only, and a suede brush is worth the couple of quid.
The Beanie: MA.STRUM Badge Beanie
The last piece is the one you will not need in September and will not be able to find in November. The MA.STRUM Badge Beanie in Jet Black is a clean knitted beanie with a turn-up cuff and the MA.STRUM badge on the front. Nothing else. That is the appeal.
MA.STRUM is the technical end of the terrace wardrobe and it is one of the brands we are putting more weight behind this winter. The beanie is the cheapest way into the label, though at £75 it is not a cheap beanie. What you are paying for is the knit, which holds its shape, and the badge, which people who know will clock from across the concourse.
One size, in black. It works with everything above, and it finishes the look without you having to think about it.
How to Put the Autumn Edit Together
Eight pieces is a wardrobe if you buy the right eight. Here are three ways to wear this lot depending on what the day looks like.
The September build. Gabicci polo, Lee jeans, Camaros, Pancho over the top. This is the mild, dry day outfit and it will carry you through most of the month. The stone overshirt against navy knit and black denim is a proper autumn palette without any of it being loud. If it is warmer than forecast, the Pancho goes over your arm and the outfit still stands up.
The match day build. Napapijri quarter zip over a tee, Lee jeans, Camaros, Lyle & Scott hooded jacket on top. Sporty, dark, easy to move in and machine washable when it gets covered in whatever it gets covered in. Swap the Lyle & Scott for the Pilloz shell if rain is forecast, and the gilet goes in your bag for the walk back.
The November build. Everything at once. Quarter zip, Lee jeans, Camaros, the full Pilloz with gilet zipped in, beanie. This is the one for the clocks going back, standing outside a pub and the walk home at eleven. Because each layer was bought to work with the others, it does not look like you have put on everything you own, even though you have.

Autumn Edit FAQs
What should I buy first if I can only get one thing?
The Pancho overshirt. It covers the widest range of temperatures on its own and it goes with everything you already own. The Pilloz is the better long-term buy if the budget stretches, because it replaces three jackets.
Do I need a size down on the Weekend Offender Pancho?
Usually, yes. It is cut generous. Take your normal size only if you plan to wear a thick knit underneath and want the room.
Is the Napapijri Pilloz warm enough for winter?
With the gilet zipped in, yes, for a UK winter. It is a short parka rather than a heavy down coat, so if you spend hours stood still in January you may want something longer over the top. For everything up to that, it is enough.
Can I wear the knitted polo under the quarter zip?
You can, and it looks good with the collar sat over the neckline. Just do not zip the quarter zip all the way up over it or the collar bunches.
Do the Diadora Camaros fit the same as the Titan and Cross Rainy?
Yes. All three sit on a medium Italian last and fit true to size. If you have one Diadora, buy the same size in the next.
Does everything in this edit go up to 3XL?
Most of it. The Pilloz, Pancho, Gabicci polo and Napapijri quarter zip all go to 3XL. The Lyle & Scott jacket stops at 2XL and the Lee jeans go to a 40 waist. Sizes sell through, so if yours is showing, do not wait.
Can I try any of this on before I buy?

What is the delivery situation?
